Department Head Agenda

2. Consent Agenda
• At the semester, the 9th Grade Attendance Policy, WIAA Athletic Participation, and class standing policies are changed to match BHS policies.
• Create a second semester credit retrieval english/social studies and a math/science class first period for students who fail first semester. Student forfeits electives and has their scheduled changed for first period Credit Retrieval. WASL Preparation will be a significant part of this class since most of these students will also be challenged to pass the 10th grade WASL. (currently first period 9th grade classes are very small and can be reconfigured to provide staffing for these classes)

• Copier Year to Date Up Significantly (budget summary provided) At year end, this budget is either added or deducted from next year’s supply budget.
• Dept. Budget Year to Date (budget summary provided)
• Three book discussion groups are beginning: Multiple Intelligences, Crucial Conversations and Working on the Work.
• District I728 budget is about $140,000 which will be assigned to schools to provide accomodations for Student Learning Plans (specific focused help for students who may struggle to pass the high school WASL) Funds will be divided by the number of Level 1 and 2 students at a school. I expect that our funds will be $8000-$10000.

4. Master Schedule Process
• bringing foreign language classes to SJH from BHS is not in our best interest because the district will not guarantee .6 staffing and we don’t have space to take this risk
• there are only five 9th grade students who participated in 3 sports after school last year so the idea of waiving PE has only a slight impact; also participation in 3 sports would not happen until mid-second semester; district procedures allow for class waivers and students can arrange for this through their high school...so student may continue to delay pe but we will not waiver pe
• Goal: create a more flexible Master Schedule that addresses the “gottchas” of our current schedule. To date, these are the ideas that seem to be most promising to meet our master scheduling goal:
• Master Schedule Draft Process V0.5 is provided to give an idea of how we can address the many concerns that have been raised as we discuss the master schedule: gender, balance, lack of exploratory options for special education students etc...
• Several 7th and 8th grade teachers expressed interest in some kind of block schedule for their grades also...perhaps two days a week for extended science labs etc...is this an option that we want to explore? (A, A, A, B, C Schedule) Could this be a school block schedule?

5. Progress Report Schedule for 2006-07
Action: First consideration of policy to use the District Progress Report Schedule next year
Reasons to Use the District Reporting Schedule
• all other secondary schools are on the district reporting schedule; this is the schedule that is advertised on all district publications
• Mid-term Student Progress Report is mailed to each student and is official notification that summarizes all classes. As a parent, I received this progress report for Kevin and Emily and it was much more important to us than progress reports from individual teachers.
• by using eSIS, counselors, administrators and Teams have easy reporting and summary information to identify students for extra help or need to communicate about options/consequences; Credit Retrieval, SAS, Study Table...
• the district reporting schedule does not limit the number of progress reports sent by a teacher and there is a move to on-line grades that makes progress reports redundant
Reasons to Keep Our Current Reporting Schedule
• we provide progress reports more often (every 3 weeks instead of every 4 weeks)
• we don’t use eSIS which is slow and inefficient
• changing to the District Schedule will/may be more work for teachers
• our current reporting schedule is within school board policies and procedures

6. Student Learning Plans for all 8th and 9th grade students who scored below standard on the 7th grade WASL
• what remediation are we doing for students who a below standard on a 7th grade WASL subtest? (this spring, 7th takes reading, writing and math and 8th takes reading, math and science)
Proposal: WASL-like classroom assessments on the curriculum we are already teaching that provide all students many opportunities to practice and apply test taking skills.
• I728 budget divided by department to create a quarterly classroom assessment for each grade level
• classroom assessments match the “look and feel” and test standard of the WASL
• budget would be distributed to the department to do the work through release time, curriculum rate time, supply budget to support this project
