Understanding by Design

There are so many systems challenges within our district. For example:

1. breakdown between remedial 9th and 10th grade math class philosophies

2. idea to move two 7th grade math units to sixth grade so the 7th grade finishes the statistics and ratio units before the 7th grade Math WASL which in turn allows the 8th grade to add the Geometry units that they haven't had time to teach...how to get everyone on the same page to make that change

3. science classes that don't match up between junior highs in the same feeder pattern

4. departments teaching the same concepts with the potential to work together but no ability to collaborate

I think that we need a shared philosophy for working and planning together and I am very interested in using Understanding by Design by Wiggins as the foundation for curriculum/teaching/learning planning.
