HRM Chap. 4 Summary: Selection
How do districts select the best teachers? Examples are given of processes in Wenatchee and Bellevue SDs. A sample application process is given and a Lk. Washington Application.
A Screen Process is given: incomplete/late applications reflect on the candidate. Review written statements, transcripts and check for academic awards. Contact references and read between the lines for gaps. Specific recommendations for rating candidates is given. A Certificated Hiring Checklist is also given. (strategic plan to walk a principal through the hiring steps)
It is recommended to have hiring teams for 5-9 people: admin, dept. head, 2 from the department, one other teacher, 1-2 parents, 1-2 students, classified. Either have a screening interview with the principal alone or start with the hiring team.
It is important to train the team. This may be the first time that most have interviewed and we are hiring someone who can be in the district for 30 years or more. Train them. An interview room set up is recommended and a sample interview questionaire.
The chapter finishes with how to do a reference check and check recommendations. Don't neglect this step.
The case study was a principal delemnia where the Team wanted a candidate and the principal wanted the other candidate. Reference checks showed that the Team candidate was not as strong. Should the principal go along with the team or decide on his own choice? Sell his choice?
