Skyview Counselor Student Learning Plan Conversation
Sharing to give you our first take on carrying out the plan at a school level.
1. Parent meetings and initial paperwork needs to be done this March. April is registration (6th-9th), WASLs, master schedule. Needs to be part of the Guidance Plan to get students ready for high school.
2. Wild idea that makes some sense: what if the SLP is on paper only...quicker, easier, meets the state standard....communicates the ongoing opportunities for...less labor, less overhead, more money to direct student services...parents and student sign attendance sheet to show they got the info. That is how we communicate sexual harrassment, 504 etc...with teachers when we don't have $350,000.
3. We are looking at student-led conferences. Counselors prepare students to share their gpa, WASL scores, attendance, discipline with parents. Students create an invitation for an after-school or evening SLP Meeting. 30 minutes student-led conference and then a counselor shares the district accommodations. Parents and students fill out a worksheet that becomes the basic data for secretary input.
4. At approximately 300 total students, Skyview has about 180 students who need SLPs. At an hour a meeting, that is 4.5 hours of counselor time...even if we could schedule efficently and within the school day. That is why we aer moving to group meetings...hopefully about 30 per sesssion for 6ish sessions.
5. We need to budget for 24 hours of counselor time for evening meetings. (24*$35=$840)
6. If we need extra time for secretary data entry (.3 * 180 SLPs *$20 per hour) $1080

Summer School Input
1. strong support for a variety of "for pay" WASL prep classes that are advertised through SLP plans...need plenty of opportunities
2. We also need improved communications with failing students to make use of summer school classes
3. Would like to see the following classes added:
A. add Biology to summer school (#1 failed class at SJH now)
B. Fine Arts (Exploratory Class)
C. Variety of WASL Prep classes
D. Independent Reading (Accelerated Reader that can be accessed from home)
minimal fee...can meet SLP goal
